Autograph letter signed "John G Whittier". 2 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Dated "Tuesday Evg [evening]",Amesbury, Massachusetts.In full: "My Dear Friend I shall be glad to see the & thy friends on Seventh day [Saturday] next. I hope the fine weather will continue; all the world is in holiday attire now. I was at the [illegible name]'s last week & Mrs. Hoxie & the boy came over & spent a day on Po Hill taking time with us. She seems to have enjoyed thy visit there very much. [illegible name] have not yet gone South, but I believe expects to next week. She hears that there is no place for a school in Greenville - the barracks having been sold. Lucy shall I suppose have reached thee by this time. In [illegible]". A staunch abolitionist, Quaker poet Whittier (1807-1892, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts) also wrote pastoral poems, including his masterpiece Snow-Bound (1866), that reflected rugged New England life. Probably best remembered today for his patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, he was once honored with holidays in some New England states. Whittier moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1836. Nicked in upper right corner. Mounting adhesive remnants on verso of blank integral leaf. Otherwise, fine condition.
