JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER
The American abolitionist and poet signs on this 3½x2 card
Signature: "John G Whittier". 3½x2 card with scalloped upper
left and lower right corners. A staunch abolitionist, Quaker poet
Whittier (1807-1892, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts) also wrote
pastoral poems, including his masterpiece Snow-Bound (1866), that
reflected rugged New England life. Probably best remembered today for his
patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, he was once honored with holidays
in some New England states. Whittier moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1836.
Lightly toned and foxed. Creased in lower right corner. Otherwise, fine
condition.
