The author of the book series A Thought for Today signed and sent this letter
to a national best-selling author to make a request regarding his signature
Combination: 1) Typed Letter Signed: "John Gunther" and "Thomas C. Liddle" on
an 8½x11 letter in blue and black ink, respectively. Dated September 2, 1968.
Features Deseret News letterhead. Sent to Mr. John Gunther, formerly of the
Daily News. In Part: "The quote which we would like to use is the following,
and would appear in / this manner: / 'Ours is the only country deliberately
founded on a good idea.' / - John Gunther' / We would appreciate your
permission to publish the above quotation with / credit to you". Mailing creases.
Staple holes in top left corner. Minor wrinkling across entire document.
Otherwise, fine condition. 2) Typed Letter Signed Twice: "John Gunther" and
initialed "JH" on a 7¼x10½ letter in blue ink. Dated October 12, 1968. Sent to
Mr. Theron C. Liddle of the Deseret News. In Part: "Indeed I am flattered and
pleased to be included in your book of quotations". Mailing creases. Staple holes in
top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition. Theron C. Liddle (1912-1977) was a
writer who published a series titled A Thought for Today throughout the
1960s, encompassing a total of five volumes. He was managing editor at the
Deseret News from 1949-1971. John Gunther (1901-1970) was an American
journalist and author whose success came primarily with a series of popular
sociopolitical works known as the "Inside" books, including the best-selling
Inside U.S.A., published in 1947. For this book series, he did intensive research,
interviewing prominent leaders and other residents in each state. From
1924-1936, he travelled throughout Europe as a foreign correspondent for the
Daily News' London office. Later in life, Gunther claimed to have worked in
every European country but Portugal.He is mostly known today for the
memoir Death Be Not Proud (1949) regarding the death of his teenage son.
This book was later turned into a television movie in 1975. From September 7,
1959 to September 17, 1960 he hosted and narrated a television program on
the ABC network entitled John Gunther's High Road; the program consisted
of travelogues of various nations around the world. Gunther's previous
experience travelling throughout the world while a journalist served him well
as narrator. Two Items.
