The Gallipolis-settlement Ensign signs off on food rations report for
the Corps of Rangers. The report details "four days victuals" of bread, meat and
whiskey to the early nineteenth-century army rangers.
Manuscript Document signed: "John H. Buell Major/ Ensign", 1
page, 4x5. Rationing report concerning the Corps of Rangers from June the 4th
(year unknown). List of names of the Rangers and detailing how much bread, meat
and whiskey was allotted to them. Remarks column states, "four days victuals/
beginning the 4th of/ June ending the 7th implicitly". Note on verso reads,
"Bread was given instead of the meat - ". John H. Buell was an
Ensign (modern-day second lieutenant) who spent the end of the eighteenth
century at the Gallipolis settlement in Ohio; he was promoted to the rank
of Major and became an Infantry commander at Fort Adams, Mississippi after the
turn of the century. Irregularly cut. Toned. Lightly worn and soiled. Edges
slightly frayed and torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
