Signature: "John H. Mitchell/Oregon", 7¼x4¼. John Hipple Mitchell (1835-1905) abandoned a family in Pennsylvania and then a mistress in California to settle in Oregon in 1860, establishing a successful law practice there. First elected to the state legislature in 1862 as a Republican, Mitchell subsequently served four nonconsecutive terms in the US Senate, winning office in 1872, 1884, 1890 and 1900, while losing bids in 1866, 1880, and 1896. In 1873, there was a failed effort to deny him his seat because of the true charge that he was a bigamist. In 1905, he became one of only five serving US Senators to be convicted of a felony. He had been indicted in the Oregon land fraud scandal which also enmeshed both of Oregon's US Representatives. Mitchell appealed his conviction, but died before it could be heard. Left edge frayed from previous binding. Lightly toned around edges. Fine condition.
