JOHN HART, PEGGY STEWART, ANN GILLIS, and GARY GRAY
Photograph showing the classic Republic Pictures logo, signed by stars John Hart, Peggy Stewart, Ann Gillis, and Gary Gray in black felt tip. Extremely rare signature from Gary Gray!
Photograph signed: "Peggy Stewart", "John Hart", "Gary Gray", "Ann Gillis", B/w 10x8. ANN GILLIS (1927-2018) had her best film roles as a child actress, including the title role in Little Orphan Annie and the role of Becky in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (both 1938). She had trouble getting good adult parts, although she appeared in several Abbot and Costello movies. Retiring from the screen in 1947, she returned to play an astronaut's mother in 2001: a Space Odyssey (1968). JOHN HART (1917-2009) was getting major roles in Westerns and other action films by the early 1950s (Kansas Territory, The Great Adventures of Captian Kidd). Hart played the title role in TV's The Lone Ranger in 52 of its early episodes (1952-1953), while Clayton Moore was holding out for a higher salary. In later decades, he guest starred frequently on TV, including appearances in six episodes of Dallas (1979-1981). He reprised his Lone Ranger character on episodes of The Greatest American Hero(1981) and Happy Days (1982). PEGGY STEWART (1923-2019), who appeared in many films, mostly Westerns, from the late 1930s into the 1960s, was one of Republic Picture's leading ladies in the 1940s. Tired of being cast in serials, she left Republic, but continued making occasional films. Stewart later appeared in several made-for-TV movies and was a guest star on a number of TV series, and she made stage appearances in the Los Angeles area. Stewart, who was married to actors Don "Red" Barry (1940-1944) and Buck Young (1953 until his death in 2000), is also a popular figure at Western film and nostalgia gatherings. Child actor GARY GRAY (1936-2006), the son of Hollywood business manager Bill Gray, broke into films at the age of three in the 1941 Joan Crawford feature, A Woman's Face. The older brother of Arlene Gray, who was also a child actress, he appeared in such films as Sun Valley Serenade (1941), Heaven Can Wait (1943), Gaslight(1944), The White Cliffs of Dover (1944), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), I'll Be Seeing You(1944), Return of the Bad Men (1948), Rachel and the Stranger (1948), The Next Voice You Hear (1950), The Painted Hills (1951, in which he worked with the original Lassie), Wild Heritage (1958) and Terror at Black Falls (1962). Gray was also seen on the small screen from 1951, appearing on several TV anthologies as well as guest starring on such series as You Are There, The Adventures of Jim Bowie, December Bride, I Love Lucy, Trackdown and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Gray also became the owner of a swimming pool repair and maintenance business, and he was a popular speaker and educator for industry groups as well as a frequent guest at film festivals. Corners lightly worn and creased. Slightly toned on outer edges. Fine condition.
