"HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!"
Signed 20x16 photo, shown making his famous steal in the final seconds of Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs, 1965
Photograph signed: "John Havlicek". B/w 19¾x15¾. The personification of Celtics pride and greatness, Havlicek played his entire NBA career (1962-1978) with what was then the most successful franchise in pro basketball. "Hondo" played on eight NBA championship teams (1963-1966, 1968-1969, 1974, 1976) and made 13 consecutive All-Star teams. Havlicek scored more points for the Celtics over his career than did Bill Russell or Larry Bird, more in fact, than any player in the team's history. One of the great moments in sports history took place in the old Boston Garden on April 15, 1965. With the Celtics leading Wilt Chamberlain's Philadelphia 76ers 110-109 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals and only seconds remaining on the clock, Hal Greer of the 76ers put the ball in play. Havlicek, who had feigned disinterest in the in-bound pass, whirled, leaped, and stole it. Celtics announcer Johnny Most made the call:"Greer is putting the ball in play. He gets it out deep and Havlicek steals it! Over to Sam Jones... Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over... It's all-l-l-l over! Johnny Havlicek stole the ball!" The NBA finals were an anti-climax that year. Boston beat the LA Lakers 4-1 for the championship, the third in a row and ultimately the third of eight for John Havlicek. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1984. Authentication sticker at lower left corner. Fine condition.
