Autograph Letter signed: "John Hawkes", 1 page, 5½x8½.
Providence, Rhode Island, 1973 March 16. On letterhead of Brown
University written to "Dear Mr. Prunett". In full: "The
enclosed isn't much and comes appallingly late - But I'm grateful to you for
writing me Sincerely," American author John Hawkes (1925-1998) was
born in Stamford, Connecticut. A Graduate of Harvard University, he
taught at Brown University for thirty years beginning in 1958. Known for
his intense work, his novels span five decades from The Cannibal
(1949) to An Irish Eye (1997). The most notable of Hawkes many
novels were his 1951 The Beetle Leg and his 1961 The Lime
Twig. His works were often set in unfamiliar locales and time periods
and were extremely imaginative, dark and often comical. Some of his other works
include The Owl (1954), Second Skin (1964), The Blood
Oranges (1970), Travesty (1976), Adventures in the Alaskan Skin
Trade (1984) and Sweet William (1993). Normal mailing folds.
Slightly creased. Slightly soiled at bottom right. Otherwise, fine
condition.
