JOHN H. BEITH [IAN HAY]. TLS: "Ian Hay", 1p, 7x7½. 47
Charles Street, Berkeley Square, W.1, 1936 November 11. On imprinted sheet
to Miss Lillie Ross-Clyne, Manchester. In full: "Thank you for your
letter. As far as I can see, the only way to stop scandal is to revive the
ancient implement which they employed in the Middle Ages - some sort of bridle
or gag which was applied to people who took away other people's characters.
You sometimes see them in museums. Yours very sincerely". Ian Hay was the
pseudonym of Scottish soldier, novelist and playwright Sir John Hay Beith
(1876-1952). He is best known for The First Hundred Thousand
(1916), which evidences the wit common to his works with the lines, "War is
hell, and all that, but it has a good deal to recommend it. It wipes out all the
small nuisances of peace-time." Beith was also the technical advisor for
Cecil B. DeMille's 1917 film, The Little American, and he wrote the
screenplays for several films, including Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film,
The Thirty-Nine Steps. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature.
Lightly soiled, Shaded at margins. Overall, fine condition.
