Church/Penns/March 8, 1861", 4¾x2½. Pennsylvanian John Hickman
(1810-1875) was elected to the US House as a Democrat in 1854 and again in 1856.
Breaking with his Party over the issue of slavery in the Kansas Territory,
Hickman served two more terms in Congress as a Republican. Immediately
following South Carolina's secession, he made a fighting speech in Philadelphia
calling for the use of force to preserve the Union. He did not seek
re-election in 1862. Creased. Soiled and corners creased. Pencil notes (unknown
hand) on verso. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
