JOHN HICKMAN
The Democrat turned Republican (over the issue of slavery) signs as a Member of Congress
Signature: "J. Hickman/M.C.", 2¾x1¼. Pennsylvanian John Hickman (1810-1875) was elected to the US House as a Democrat in 1854 and again in 1856. Breaking with his Party over the issue of slavery in the Kansas Territory, Hickman served two more terms in Congress as a Republican. Immediately following South Carolina's secession, he made a fighting speech in Philadelphia calling for the use of force to preserve the Union. He did not seek re-election in 1862. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
