Autograph Letter signed: "John Hilton", 3 pages (integral
leaf), 4x5. New Broad Street [London], 1875 February 26. On
personal letterhead to "My dear Dr. Reynolds", in full: "I
regret that I shall not be able to meet you next Monday. My time is
pre-occupied. If agreeable to your convenience I can be at Inverness Terrace on
Wednesday afternoon between 3 & 5 o'clock. Please oblige me with your
decision on the day & hour as soon as convenient. Yours faithfully".
English surgeon and teacher John Hilton (1805-1878) was called
"Anatomical John" for his impressive knowledge of the human anatomy. He was
especially advanced in his understanding of the brain and spinal column. Hilton
practiced at Guy's Hospital, and lectured for the Royal College of Surgeons.
His series of lectures on "Rest and Pain" (1859-1862) are still in print and
still widely consulted. Hilton was Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen
Victoria. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased and toned. Ink note (unknown
hand) on verso. Fine condition.
