JOHN HILTON
"Anatomical John" writes to arrange an appointment.
Autograph Letter signed: "John Hilton", 3 pages (integral leaf), 4x5. New Broad Street [London], 1875 February 26. On personal letterhead to "My dear Dr. Reynolds", in full: "I regret that I shall not be able to meet you next Monday. My time is pre-occupied. If agreeable to your convenience I can be at Inverness Terrace on Wednesday afternoon between 3 & 5 o'clock. Please oblige me with your decision on the day & hour as soon as convenient. Yours faithfully". English surgeon and teacher John Hilton (1805-1878) was called "Anatomical John" for his impressive knowledge of the human anatomy. He was especially advanced in his understanding of the brain and spinal column. Hilton practiced at Guy's Hospital, and lectured for the Royal College of Surgeons. His series of lectures on "Rest and Pain" (1859-1862) are still in print and still widely consulted. Hilton was Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen Victoria. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased and toned. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
