JOHN HIX
TLS on letterhead of his Strange As It Seems letterhead
Typed Letter signed: "John Hix", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, 1939 November 22. On letterhead of Strange As It Seems, CBS-Radio, to Edward S. Hoffmeister, Darby, Pennsylvania. In full: "I would be very happy to send along an original STRANGE AS IT SEEMS drawing in accordance with your request. However, it is necessary that we keep our file of these drawings intact. Many thanks for your interest in writing. Cordially". John Hix (b. 1908), a staff artist for the Washington Herald, began the informational comic strip "Strange As It Seems" in 1928. At its height it reached 1,300 newspapers. The strip was filled with unusual true stories, similar to Ripley's "Believe It Or Not." Hix did the artwork, while the stories were written first by his brother Ernest, then by Ernest's wife Elsie Hix, and finally by Ernest, Jr., until it ceased publication in the 1970s. Two radio programs were based on the strip, a half-hour show in 1939 and a 15-minute feature in 1947-1948. Book collections were also published. Hix insisted on three authenticating sources for each of his stories. Two horizontal mailing creases. Toned at center right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
