Autograph Letter signed: "John", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, March 30. Addressed to Kitty Carlisle, In full: "Dear Kitty I Just got back and found ACT ONE on my desk. A thousand thanks. I'd already seen it in Brentano's in San Francisco and was elated to find it back in print. For anyone directly or indirectly concerned with theater it is obligatory reading. Thanks again - and love" This postcard was written to, and was in the estate of, versatile singer, actress and television personality Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), who was still performing a one-woman show as late as 2006. She was married to playwright Moss Hart until his death in 1961. Act One an autobiography written by Moss Hart, deals with his rise from poverty to financial stability and his theatrical triumphs. In 1937, John Houseman (1902-1988), with Orson Welles, founded the Mercury Theater, at which he produced and directed radio specials and stage presentations. In Hollywood, Houseman produced many fine films and commuted to New York to produce and direct Broadway plays and TV specials. In all, the films he produced were nominated for 20 Oscars, winning seven. He won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for portraying Kingsfield, the stern Harvard law professor, in the film The Paper Chase, only his second screen appearance; he reprised the role in the TV series of the same name. Accompanied by a 4½x6½ printed photograph of Houseman from the shoulders up against a orange background.. Normal mailing folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top left corner. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
