JOHN HOWARD GRIFFIN
The author of the bestselling 1961 book Black Like Me thanks a woman for sending him a book and talks about an upcoming surgery.
Typed Letter signed: "John Howard Griffin", 1 page, 8½x11. Fort Worth, Texas, 1966 September 27. On his personal letterhead and written to "Dear Mrs. Bishop". In full: "Your autographed book came this morning and we are thrilled to have it. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to send it along to us. We will read it with great relish and treasure it. How wonderful of Father Stan to think of this. This is just to tell you that it arrived in perfect condition and has already been put on my bedside table where I reserve it to read during the recuperation from my surgery a bit later in the week. Father Stan has spoken to me so much about you, has even sent me one of your tapes... so now I can only hope that our paths cross somewhere in the near future. Yours devotedly." American author John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) was born in Dallas, Texas. After losing his sight during an accident while serving in the U.S. Air Force, he began his career as a writer. Griffin is best remembered for his bestselling memoir Black Like Me (1961), in which he darkened his skin and traveled through the American south and detailed his experiences with racism, equality and prejudice. Griffin's other works include The Devil Rides Outside (1952), The Church and the Black Man (1969), A Time to be Human (1977) and Scattered Shadows: A Memoir of Blindness and Vision (2004).
