He signs a typescript of the US House Resolution resolving to send a
delegation to the funeral of President Kennedy
Typescript signed: "John J. Rhodes, M.C./1st Arizona", 1 page, 8½x11. Typed text of the resolution passed by the US House
of Representatives on November 25, 1963, extending condolences to the Kennedy
family and authorizing the Speaker to appoint a Committee of 100 members to
attend the President's funeral. John Jacob Rhodes (1916-2003) was a Republican
U.S. Representative from Arizona from 1953-1983. House Minority
Leader from 1973-1980, Rhodes, a friend and supporter of President Richard
Nixon, had been one of three Congressional representatives to visit Nixon in
the White House to tell him that the President's struggle to remain in
office had been lost. Nixon would resign two days later. Rhodes, a WWII veteran
and an attorney and business owner, had earlier helped to launch the
presidential bid of fellow Arizonan Barry Goldwater, and he would chair
the 1976 and 1980 Republican National Conventions. In 2002, Rhodes was
one of the first recipients of the Congressional Distinguished Service Award.
