Typed Letter signed: "John J. Williams", as U.S. Senator, 1 page, 8x10½, affixed on an 8½x11 sheet. Washington, District of Columbia, March 12, 1947. On his Senate letterhead to Ralph Errington Ward, Jr., Melrose Highlands, Massachusetts. In full: "In response to your letter of March 11, 1947, I am pleased to enclose my autograph for my collection. Yours sincerely". Magazine photo of Williams affixed at lower edge. Accompanied by transmittal envelope bearing Williams' stamped frank. John James Williams (1904-1988) was the first United States Senator from Delaware to serve four terms (1947-1970). Williams, a Republican, was called "the Watchdog of the Treasury" and "the Lone Wolf Investigator" for his efforts to combat waste and corruption. He firmly believed in cutting back on wasteful federal government spending. He was the Congressman who first discovered and made public the corrupt practices of the office of Bobby Baker in 1963. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
