Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "Paine" (in the song lyrics), 10½x5½. Musical quotation and the following lyrics are in Paine's hand: "We will come with joy, Dear Maud, to tea, dear Maude on Sunday Night, Yes, we will come with joy, dear Maud, to tea, to tea, on Sunday night. Your loving Paine." John Knowles Paine (1839-1906) was an American organist, composer and music historian (The History of Music to the Death of Schubert). Harvard University made him the first chair of music at an American university. His compositions have been experiencing a revival, and many have been recorded. Among Paine's friends at Harvard were John Fiske, faculty member and librarian, and his wife Maud, to whom this song is dedicated. John Fiske was a prolific author of philosophical and historical works and an influential advocate of Darwin's theory. Fold creases not near signature. Lightly worn at edges.
