JOHN KEBLE
A signature from the poet and churchman
Signature: "John Keble", 3½x1 affixed to 5x3 envelope. John Keble (1792-1866) was an English poet and churchman, and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Studying at the University of Oxford and taking his Holy Orders while still attending, Keble became a curate to his father (a reverend) and later a curate to the St. Michael and St. Martin's Church. During his time as a curate, Keble wrote The Christian Year, a collection of religious poems written for Sundays and other holy feasts of the Church of England. After giving a sermon on "national apostasy", Keble became one of the leading figures of the Oxford Movement, alongside John Henry Newman and Edward Pusey. Keble published several other books of poems, and continued to write until his death in 1866. Signature: lightly soiled. Corners slightly worn. Lightly toned. Paper remnants on top edge. Crease across top margin. Otherwise, fine condition. Sheet: Ink and pencil notes (unknown hand). Top right and top left corner torn. Right margin torn and frayed. Light surface creases.
