JOHN KERR
The actor signs this typed letter which explains that the recipient has made a mistake in
thinking he was someone else, and that he was an actor before becoming a lawyer
Typed letter signed: “John Kerr” in black ink. 8½x11. November 11, 2008. Typed on
personal letterhead to “Dear William Dutcher.” In part: “I agree with you and your family
that Johnny Kerr was a first rate basketball player. Wasn't there also a John Kerr who played
Major League baseball? Over the years I've learned that my name is fairly common, although
not quite as common as Smith or Jones. But I'm not the athlete you referred to. Before I
became a lawyer in 1970 I was an actor in the entertainment industry. My best years were in
the 1950s, when I appeared in the film versions of the stage plays 'Tea and Sympathy' and
'South Pacific'. John Kerr (b. 1931), son of an acting family, went directly from Harvard to
Broadway, where he had an important part in Bernadine (1953) and the lead in Tea and
Sympathy (1955), repeating the latter role in the 1956 film. Subsequent film appearances
included South Pacific and The Pit and the Pendulum (1961). He played district attorneys in
two TV series (Arrest and Trial, 1963; and Peyton Place, 1966) before turning to the real
practice of law. He continued to make occasional TV guest appearances, most recently in two
episodes of City Life (1996-1997). Lightly creased throughout. Normal mailing folds. Ink
note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
