Typed Letter signed: "John L Cable", 1p. 8 ½ x11, Cable and
Cable letterhead. Lima, Ohio, 1942 January 14, to Hon. Roy G. Fitzgerald,
Dayton, Ohio. In full: "Dear Roy: We were delighted to receive your Christmas
card. You are to be congratulated on your children and grandchildren. Have not
reached the grandfather stage and am somewhat envious of your fine family. Trust
you are well, busy and still the leader you used to be in the 3rd District. Can,
however, appreciate a person can obtain many joys from living other than in a
political way. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours," John L. Cable
(1884-1971) was the great-grandson of Joseph Cable winner of the Medal of Honor
during the American Indian Wars. He was admitted to the bar in Ohio (1909),
after earning a J. D. from George Washington University. After serving as a
prosecutor (1917-1921) he entered politics, was elected to Congress as a
Republican and served the first time from 1921-1925. Choosing not to run for
reelection, he resumed a law practice. He ran again and served from 1929-1933
but was unsuccessful in his next bid. He was appointed Government appeal
agent of Selective Service Board No. 2 and served from 1948-1960. Normal
mailing folds. Lightly toned and soiled. Otherwise, fine
condition.
