Photograph inscribed and signed: "To my good friend and associate/Cecil Owen with good wishes/John L. Lewis". B/w, 11x12. Lewis (1880-1969), a giant among labor leaders in the early 1900s, helped to raise the living standards of millions of American families after he organized industrial workers into the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and negotiated over a billion dollars in wage increases. The President of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) (1920-1960), he helped to organize a number of leading labor unions, including the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the United Auto Workers (UAW). Under his leadership, the UMWA Welfare and Retirement Fund was created through a contract with the federal government, providing health care delivery to the workers in America's coal fields through the establishment of eight hospitals and numerous clinics in Appalachia. In 1960, Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. Adequate contrast. Silvered image. Creased with surface wear. Upper and lower blank margins removed. Nicked at lower edge. 1½-inch diagonal tear from upper right edge, removing small part of blank margin. Lightly soiled and stained.
