JOHN L. McLAURIN
Signature from McLaurin as Senator of South Carolina, dated 1898.
Extremely rare!
Signature: "John L McLaurin senator/Bennettsville S.C./Dec
28-1898-", in black ink, 6½x2¾. John L. McLaurin (1860-1934) was a
U.S. Representative and Senator from South Carolina, first elected to office
as a Representative in 1892. Previously Attorney General of South
Carolina, McLaurin was elected to office three times before being
appointed Senator to fill the vacancy of Eli T. Stackhouse. His tenure as
Senator went fairly well, although he was censured in 1902 for brawling with
Senator Benjamin Tillman on the Senate floor. After 1903, McLaurin resumed
his previous practice of law and continued to serve in the State senate. Left
edge creased and torn. Toned. Bottom edge irregular. Ink slightly smeared on
"senator". Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
