JOHN Le CARRÉ

He inscribes and signs this copy of his book The Looking Glass War

Inscribed Book Signed: "For Tony/with best/wishes/John leCarré/Hampstead" on title page, 237p, 4¼x7, paperback. His novel, The Looking Glass War, Pan Books Ltd., London: 1966 (first published 1965). His first book following the tremendous success of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which appeared as a movie in 1965. English novelist John le Carré  (1931-2020) is the pseudonym of David J.M. Cornwell, who served as an intelligence officer for the British Army after World War II; two decades later, he joined the Foreign Service (1960-1964), doing work for the Secret Service. He uses these experiences to create and enhance his world of spies, lamplighters (agents who perform eavesdropping and trailing procedures), scalp hunters (overseas agents who complete dangerous acts such as murder and kidnapping) and assassins. Among his best known works are The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1963) and the trilogy which began with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974). Although it is difficult to do justice to his complex stories in a 2-hour film, many of his novels have been turned into movies, including the above and also The Little Drummer Girl (1984), The Russia House (1990) and The Tailor of Panama (2001). Front cover slightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) on back cover. Otherwise, fine condition.
