Inscribed book signed twice: "To Carl,/John Leonard", and on last page, "Merry/Christmas/& a/peaceful/New Year/John &/Barbara" 95 pages, 7x10. Wild Bill Elliot (1976) by John Leonard, a biography of the famed western actor. American literary, television, and film critic John Leonard (1939-2008) got his first journalism job at the National Review Magazine in 1959, where he worked with future acclaimed writers Joan Didion, Garry Wills, Renata Adler and Arlene Corce. He later held jobs as an English teacher and Drama and Literature Director before joining the New York Times Book Review in 1967. There, he became executive editor in 1971 (at the young age of 31). While he's most known for his literary and screen criticism, he was prolific writer of all subjects, having his work featured in Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, Playboy, Vogue, Newsweek and dozens of others. He wrote for New York Magazine from 1984 until his death in 2008. Some of his most celebrated works include Black Conceit (1973), Lonesome Rangers : Homeless Minds, Promised Lands, Fugitive Cultures (2002) and The Last Innocent White Man in America (1994).
