John Loder sends an autograph letter to Mr. Colin Withers of sending
him photographs.
Autograph Letter Signed: "John Loder", 1p, front and verso on
Hôtel Métropole, Blackpool letterhead, 5x7. Metropole, Blackpool, no year
May 2. To Mr. Colin Withers. In full: "Herewith the Photos of
la Belle Anna May W. (not present) Incidentally I am [illegible]
have sent you one of me along with [illegible]! Thanks for sending my
Fan pictures along. Come up to see us some day at Blackpool - sur- buen! Yours
sincerely" John Loder (1898-1988) was a British army officer during World
War I (present at Gallipoli and The Somme) and the Irish Uprising of 1916
(present when his father accepted the Irish surrender). After military service,
Loder took up acting and soon moved to the US. He played mostly supporting
roles (How Green Was My Valley, 1941), but starred as the romantic lead
in King Solomon's Mines (1937). He was married to actress Hedy
Lamarr from 1943 to 1947, one of several marriages for each. Their marriage
is featured in the recent Irish play, Michael James Ford's Hedy Lamarr and
the Easter Rising (2006). Lightly soiled. Fold crease not near signature.
