JOHN CANNELLA, JOSEPH BATTLEY and OTHERS The federal judge, WWII veteran, and three others sign an album leaf Signatures: "John M Cannella/City of New York" and "Joseph F Battley/Brig Gen G.S.C. Wash. D.C.", 9½x2½. Also signed on verso: "Stacey Johnson", "Dick Johnson" and "It was a pleasure - my first/Audience - Louise Burton". John Cannella (1908-1996) was a star football lineman at Fordham University who played briefly for the New York Giants to pay for law school. He held several administrative positions in New York City government before being appointed a federal judge by President Kennedy in 1963. Serving on the bench for 31 years, his noteworthy judicial decisions included sentencing Clifford Irving to 2½ years in jail for his bogus biography of Howard Hughes (1972), clearing the way for Carl Icahn's takeover of Trans World Airlines (1985) and sentencing U.S. Representative Mario Biaggi to eight years in prison in the Wedtech scandal (1987). Joseph F. Battley (1893-1970) was an Army staff officer who rose to head the General Service Command (1942-1945). From 1945 until his retirement in 1947, he was head of US Army public relations. Retiring from the service, Battley became President of the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, which worked to delay the regulation of lead paint. No information is available on the signers on verso. Merits further research. Battley's signature slightly smudged. Slightly soiled. Slightly frayed right edge. Signatures on verso show through faintly. Otherwise, fine condition.
