American football game John Smith ever saw was one he kicked in. A
top-flight amateur soccer star in England, he became New England Patriots'
place kicker for 10 seasons (1974-1983). He scored in 96 consecutive games, a
team record; and his 129 points scored in 1980 is the most by any player since
O.J. Simpson's record 135 in 1975. Smith was color commentator on the first
American Super Bowl telecast in England. He runs soccer camps and leagues in New
