8x10. Democrat John Malcolm Patterson (1921-2021) was elected to serve
the state of Alabama as Governor from 1959-1963. Before his tenure in the
executive office, he was Attorney General of the state from 1955-1959 and
served in both WWII and the Korean War, attaining the rank of Major in the
United States Army. He defeated future Governor George Wallace in the
Democratic primary in 1958, and was defeated by Lurleen Wallace, George's
wife, in the 1966 primary. Outside of his staunch segregationist stance, he was a
relatively progressive governor who promoted school and highway construction.
In preparation for the Bay of Pigs invasion, President Eisenhower asked
Patterson to train the pilots that would man the air invasion. Patterson went
on to advise newly-elected President John F. Kennedy on the invasion plans.
He was the appointed chief justice for the Special Supreme Court for the case
concerning Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who refused to remove a Ten
Commandments monument from the Alabama Court House. Since 2012,
Patterson has served as the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
