JOHN MCCULLOUGH
A rare signature from the Shakespearean actor, signed "Very truly yours"
Autograph sentiment signed: "Baltimore/Dec. 13/Very truly yours/John McCullough", in black ink, 4¾x3. John McCullough (1832-1885) was an Irish born American actor, moving to America at the age of 16. He made his acting debut in 1857 at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia, and continued to appear in mostly Shakespearean roles alongside actors like Edwin Booth and Edwin Forrest. While he was better regarded in America, he did not fare well in England, even in his most successful roles. In 1884, while performing on stage, McCullough suffered a mental breakdown that was perceived as intoxication, and was booed off stage. He was later appropriately diagnosed and confined to an asylum, but his condition continued to decline, and he died in the asylum at the age of 53. Fold in center. Stained and toned along margins. Corners lightly worn and creased. Fingerprint stains across. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
