JOHN M. ASHBROOK
John M. Ashbrook signs a card.
Annotated card signed "John M Ashbrook/17th Ohio", 3½x2 card. John M Ashbrook (1928-1982) was an American politician. A graduate of Harvard and of Ohio State University's law school, he became publisher of the Johnstown Independent, his late father's newspaper. He was also elected to his father's seat in the United Stated House of Representatives in 1960, a seat that he held until his death. He ran against Richard Nixon in 1972 in some state primaries; Ashbrook is possibly best remembered for his "No Left Turns" slogan during the primaries, which symbolized his and other conservatives' perception that the Republican Nixon had "turned left" on many issues, including creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and détente with the Soviet Union and China. Later, during the Watergate scandal, he became the first House Republican to call for Nixon's resignation. Lightly toned. "M" in signature is lightly smeared. Otherwise, fine condition.
