Inscribed photograph signed: "To Pauline/ I wont be happy/until Dad is
a/Colonel/John Miljan." B/w, 4¾x6¾. Miljan (1892-1960, born Jovan
Miljanovic in Lead City, South Dakota) was an American actor with over 200
movie and TV shows to his credit from 1924 to 1958. He started out playing
romantic roles in silent movies, but moved to villainous roles and, later, to
playing more authoritaritative characters. Among his more memorable roles are as
General George Custer in Cecil B. DeMille's The Plainsman (1936) and his
talking movie debut, a promotional trailer for the first full-length talkie
The Jazz Singer (1927). Lightly toned and spotted. Tape remnants in
corners. Paperclip imprint and rust stains in upper left corner. Adhesive
residue on verso (does not show through). "aul" in first line, "be" on second
line and "a" in "dad on third line of signature faint but legible. Otherwise,
fine condition.
