JOHN M. ALLEN
The Confederate Private signs on this 7x3 page in ink
Signature; "John M. Allen/Tupelo/Miss", 7x3. John Mills Allen (1846-1917), a Confederate private in the Civil War, became a lawyer and US Congressman (1885-2001), but still prided himself on the rank of private. Allen, a skilled orator, reportedly "kept Congress laughing," and attracted large crowds to his campaign appearances. When urging Congress to fund a national fishery hatchery in his home town of Tupelo, Allen declared that Tupelo was located "right in the center of the World", that the sun traveled directly over the town, and that fish were clamoring to be hatched there. The facility was built and is now called The Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Edges lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
