JOHN MONK SAUNDERS
Rare inscribed photo of the Oscar-winning writer.
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/William Millstein/from/John Monk
Saunders/July 28, 1928/Hollywood, California". B/w, 7¼x9½. This is a rare
signed photograph of the World War I veteran and writer whose story,
Wings, was adapted into the first movie to win the Academy Award.
Saunders (1897-1940), a veteran of the US Flying Corps from World War I,
became a journalist and short story writer. Many of his stories reflected his
wartime experience and were adapted intolively action films with
rich characterization and a subtly anti-war perspective. His short story
Wings was turned into the film which won the first ever Academy Award for
Best Picture 1927-1928. Another celebrated film, The Dawn Patrol, won him
an Oscar for Best Story (1930-1931). He was the first husband of actress
Fay Wray (1928-1939); they had a daughter. The character Nikki in The
Last Flight (1931), a story of disillusioned American flyers living in Paris
in the 1920s, is said to be modeled on Wray, who even played the role in a stage
version. Unhappy after his divorce from Wray, Saunders committed suicide in
1940. Creased. No show through from mounting remnants and ink note (unknown
hand) on verso. Overall, fine condition.
