JOHN MORTIMER COURTNEYThe civil servant who specialized in banking and finance signed this Canadian dollar Currency Signed: “J.M. Courtney” 3¼x7¼. Dominion of Canada dollar #936834. John Mortimer Courtney (1838-1920) was an English financier and banker. Courtney had a career in finance that spanned several continents; he worked first in India, and then in Australia. Then, following an invitation from the Canadian minister of Finance, John Rose, he began functioning as the chief clerk and assistant secretary to the Canadian Treasury Board in 1869. In 1878, he was promoted to deputy minister and ex officio deputy receiver general and secretary to the Treasury Board. Courtney was made a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (1897) and a Companion of the Imperial Service Order (1903). Toned. Lightly creased and soiled throughout. Corners and edges somewhat worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
