JOHN MURRAY ANDERSON
Youthful vintage photo of John Murray Anderson posing in a suit and tie. Accompanied by his unsigned playbill for the Imperial Theatre.
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Harry Thompson Wrgiht;-/Sincerely/John Murray Anderson/ 1925", in black ink. B/w, 8x10. Signed in 1925. Vintage photograph. Accompanied by his unsigned playbill for the Imperial Theatre (29 pages, 6½x8). John Murray Anderson (1886-1954, born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) was a theatre director, producer and songwriter and a playwright and screenwriter. After being educated in Newfoundland, Scotland and Switzerland, Anderson came to New York City. His first job there was as an antiques dealer, but he gave this up after a year and became involved in theatre. He debuted on Broadway in The Greenwich Follies (1919-1920); he not only produced and directed this revue, but wrote the book and lyrics and well. This was the first 31 productions, mostly musical revues, for Anderson between 1919 and 1954, where he did everything but act: he directed, produced and staged productions, wrote lyrics and even designed scenery and lighting. He also directed the film King of Jazz (1930), directed the water ballets in Bathing Beauty (1944), wrote the screenplay for Ziegfeld Follies (1946) and used his experience directing Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1942 to 1951 to direct the circus sequences in The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). Corners and edges creased. Light surface serrations. Lightly toned. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
