Pan American Games
First Day Cover signed: "John Naber", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover
honoring the 1959 Pan American Games, 10-cent U.S. Air Mail stamp affixed,
postmarked Chicago, IL, August 27, 1959, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. U.S. swimmer
John Naber (b. 1956) won four gold medals and one silver medal at the
1976 Olympics in Montreal, breaking four world records and becoming
the most-decorated U.S. athlete of those games and the first to win
two individual medals on the same day. Naber, who won golds in the 100-meter
backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, 400-meter relay and 800-meter free relay (all
in record-setting times) and his silver in the 200-meter freestyle, had won
three gold medals at the Pan-American Games the previous year and was the
holder of 15 collegiate championships. The first swimmer to break the
two-minute barrier for the 200-meter backstroke, Naber went on to become a
commentator and host on ABC's Wide World of Sports and on ESPN and is an
author and lecturer. Upper loop of the "J" in John touches lower portion of
pictorial postmark. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
