JOHN NABER
The Olympic swimming champion signs this First Day Cover honoring the Pan American Games
First Day Cover signed: "John Naber", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover honoring the 1959 Pan American Games, 10-cent U.S. Air Mail stamp affixed, postmarked Chicago, IL, August 27, 1959, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. U.S. swimmer John Naber (b. 1956) won four gold medals and one silver medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, breaking four world records and becoming the most-decorated U.S. athlete of those games and the first to win two individual medals on the same day. Naber, who won golds in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, 400-meter relay and 800-meter free relay (all in record-setting times) and his silver in the 200-meter freestyle, had won three gold medals at the Pan-American Games the previous year and was the holder of 15 collegiate championships. The first swimmer to break the two-minute barrier for the 200-meter backstroke, Naber went on to become a commentator and host on ABC's Wide World of Sports and on ESPN and is an author and lecturer. Upper loop of the "J" in John touches lower portion of pictorial postmark. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
