verso. Biography in Spanish. John Neumeier (b. 1942) is an American
choreographer who first trained in theater at Marquette University, located in
his hometown of Milwaukee. After years of studying in Europe, Neumeier
founded the Hamburg Ballet, originally a department of the Hamburg State
Opera, in 1973. Neumeier has turned the ballet troupe into an internationally
renowned association which has its own ballet school and youth ballet
organization. As a choreographer, he tends to create ballets centered around a
piece of literature. Examples include Death in Venice (2003) and A Streetcar
