Typed Letter signed: "John O. Pastore", 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1974 January 23. On his official letterhead as Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy to John R. Ottina, Commissioner, Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am enclosing a copy of correspondence which I received from a constituent, Mr. Ricardo Pena, Director of the Latin American Community Center in Providence, Rhode Island, concerning its application for federal funding to continue the Spanish bilingual program. [Item not included.] This appears to be a most worthy program and I hope that, consistent with your rules and regulations, you can see fit to approve funding for it. I would appreciate your advice. With best wishes I am sincerely yours". John Orlando Pastore (1907-2000) was Governor of Rhode Island (1945-1950), before representing that State in the US Senate (1950-1976). He was the first Italian-American elected a State's Governor, and the first elected to the US Senate. (Charles Poletti of New York had succeeded to the office of governor in 1942, but was never elected in his own right.) Pastore delivered the keynote address to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Multiple mailing folds. Fine condition.
