JOHN OSBORNE
Signed autograph sentiment on a 5x3 card, dated by him in
1970
Autograph Sentiment signed: "15.12/70/Best wishes/John Osborne",
5x3 card. British playwright John Osborne (1929-1994) revolutionized the
British stage with his Look Back in Anger, a revelatory play about
post-Imperial Britain. It established Osborne as the "angry young man" of
British theater. He said later that he knew his plays were succeeding when
they made the audience uneasy, or when somebody said they went too far.
Laurence Olivier, who had initially disliked Look Back in Anger, the
asked Osborne to write something for him, and the result was another critically
praised work, The Entertainer (1957). His Luther (1961)
earned a Tony, completing his recognition as a major playwright. He remained
in demand for stage, film and television scripts, but many felt that his later
work did not live up to his spectacular start. Osborne's autobiography, A
Better Sort of Person, contains some of the cruelest language ever
directed at ex-spouses (all but the last of five). Fine condition.
