JOHN OXENFORD
The nineteenth-century London dramatist criticizes a particularly scene, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "J. Oxenford" in black ink. 1 page, 4½x7 folded. Written on personal mourning stationary. Pentonville, Central London. In part: "The scene might indeed be [illegible] to Tiana, but then the scene in places will be too busy". John Oxenford (1812-1877) was an English dramatist and translator. His career began writing on finance, but his excellent linguistic skills led him to author many translations from German, most notably Goethe's Dichtung un Wahrheit (1846) and Eckermann's Conversations with Goethe (1850). Later, he turned to playwriting, his first being My Fellow Clerk (1835) which premiered at the Lyceum Theatre, and would go on to write many more including Porter's Knot (1858), Twice Killed (1835) and Last Days of Pompeii (1872); he furthermore worked as a dramatic critic in The Times. Normal mailing folds. Slightly worn and soiled. Corners and edges slightly frayed. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
