JOHN DANKWORTH
He responds to an invitation to participate in an unnamed music festival
Typed Letter signed; "John Dankworth", 1p. 7x5¼ (top of page has been trimmed away). No location or date. In full:   "Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying, but the difficulty with this enquiry, as with so many enquiries I receive regarding Festivals, is this. In the world of entertainment in which I move rather more frequent than that of Music Festivals, commitments are not generally made as far ahead as this date. It is therefore difficult for me to make plans for single engagements when such commitments as overseas tours, film scores etc might later coincide with the period in question. However I am most interested in being involved in efforts of this kind. If you would be so kind as to contact me at the latest decision as to whether I can be of help to you and write me again at the above address I would be glad to let you know whether my plans for 1967 will permit me to perform for you. If this is then so we can perhaps meet and discuss the form my participation would take. Yours very sincerely," English jazz composer and musician, John Dankwork (1927-2010) was born into a family of musicians and studied at London's Royal Academy of Music. He began his career on the British jazz scene and in 1949 was Musician of the Year, attended the Paris Jazz Festival and toured Sweden. In 1950 he formed the Dankworth Seven and in 1953 formed his big band, married his singer Cleo Laine in 1958 the same time his career as a "popular" composer of themes - The Avengers and Tomorrow's World, began. He was professor of music at Gresham College, London (1984-1986) and was made a Knight Bachelor in the 2006 New Year's Honours List. Lightly creased and soiled. Horizontal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
