writes about school funding a year before the election
Typed letter signed: "John Paul Hammerschmidt" as Congressman,
1p, 8½x10. Washington, D.C., 1973 June 14. To Doctor Herman Goldberg,
Associate Commissioner for Equal Educational Opportunity, Washington, D.C. In
full: "This is in further reference to our correspondence on the efforts
of Stuttgart Public School System to receive ESAA funding. The Stuttgart
application was initially received by your office and Batch 1 review in
February. Since the application was not found acceptable for approval at that
time, they have resubmitted an application for the Batch 3 review, which I
understand is presently under study, I have been advised that the Dallas office
has forwarded the application to your office, and I would appreciate your
attention in this subsequent review." John Paul Hammerschmidt (1922-2015)
was a Republican U.S. Congressman from Arkansas (1967-1993). At 52, he ran for
reelection in 1974 against a 28-year-old law professor, Bill Clinton.
Hammerschmidt on August 5, 1974 stated that he was not sure if Nixon's actions
in the Watergate cover-up were impeachable. On August 7, 1974, Clinton said that
Hammerschmidt's statement "puts him out of step with all the Republicans on the
Judiciary Committee...the President should resign and spare the country the
agony of this impeachment...." Hammerschmidt defeated Clinton in a close
election with 52 percent of the vote. Horizontal fold touches descender in
"J". Staple holes in upper left corner, receipt stamping at bottom blank margin.
Lightly creased. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine
