JOHN PATRICK
Playwright John Patrick sends an autograph letter of apology
Autograph Letter Signed: "John Patrick", 1p, 8½x11 on personal letterhead. Hasty Hill Farm,
1973 November 20. To: "Dear Mr. Stanhope". In full:"I have been in the midst of acquiring
a new home in the Virgin Islands and moving for the past six months without time to attend to
correspondences. Hence the delay. I am flattered that you'd want my autograph. If I have any
pictures, God knows where they are at this moment. Maybe at the bottom of the sea. So this will
have to do. Best of health to you!" Playwright and screenwriter John Patrick (1905-1995), born
John Patrick Goggan, won a Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his 1953
stage adaptation of Vern J. Sneider's novel, The Teahouse of the August Moon. His first play,
Hell Freezes Over, had run on Broadway in 1935 and it opened the door to a Hollywood
screenwriting career. Patrick's notable screenplays include Three Coins in the Fountain
(1954), Love is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), High Society (1956), The World of Suzie
Wong (1960) and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968). Fold creases not near signature. Fine
condition.
