John Philip Sousa sends an autograph letter of recommendation for a
band member.
Autograph Letter signed: "John Philip Sousa", 1p, 8½x11.
Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, 1917 September 2. On letterhead of Willow
Grove Park to "B. A. Rolfe". In full: "It is with great
pleasure I bring to your attention Miss Margery Moody. Miss Moody has appeared
with the band in Boston and here in Willow Grove and has made a most emphatic
success. Be sure and have the young lady sing for you, for you will find her an
artist of rare merit. Most sincerely." John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was
Bandmaster of the U.S. Marine Band from 1880-1892, when he organized his own
band and began touring the U.S. and overseas. He composed about 140 military
marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (1896) as well as comic
operas. Lightly creased. Pinhead sized holes at 3 fold intersections. Two
¼-inch paper separations at right edge, one touching a line of text. Otherwise,
fine condition.
