JOHN PHILIP SOUSA
John Philip Sousa signs and draws four bars of music.
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "John Philip Sousa/1908", 1p, 6x4¼. Sousa, who has drawn 4 bars of music on the letterhead of the Massenburg Hotel in Henderson, N.C., has titled the music: "'The March of the Fair'". John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) wrote "The Fairest of the Fair" in 1908, the year he signed this autograph. This is likely the work that "the March King" has written here. Sousa was Bandmaster of the U.S. Marine Band from 1880-1892, when he organized his own band and began touring the U.S. and overseas. He composed about 140 military marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (1896). Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold between the middle and last names. Slightly soiled. Mounting remnants on verso (light show through at perimeter). Overall, fine condition.
