Partly Printed Check signed: "John Philip Sousa," 6½x2¾. New York, 1920 January 12. Drawn on Lincoln Trust Company, payable to "cash" for $200.00. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) is known chiefly for writing over 100 marches, including such classics as The Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post, earning him the title of "The March King". Sousa, who had studied violin and trombone during his childhood, joined the U.S. Marine Band at age 13, playing with the group from 1867-1872. After later playing in popular orchestras, he returned in 1880 as director of the Marine Band, which is called the "President's Own". In addition to his many musical compositions, Sousa wrote five books, including three novels and an autobiography. Usual bank cancellation holes not touching signature. Fine condition.
