Sousa, who had studied violin and trombone during his childhood, joined the U.S. Marine Band at age 13, playing with the group from 1867-1872. After later playing in popular orchestras, he returned in 1880 as director of the Marine Band, which is called the "President's Own". In addition to his many musical compositions, Sousa wrote five books, including three novels and an autobiography. Lightly creased. Bank cancellation holes touch the "h" in John and the upper loops of the "Ph" and "l" in Philip. Fine condition.
