JOHN PHILIP SOUSA
John Philip Sousa sends a typed letter of thanks for the painting.
Typed Letter signed: "John Philip Sousa", 1p, 8½x5½. On letterhead of Sousa and his Band to Wm. a. Temple, Des Moines, Iowa. In full: "Yours of the 3rd at hand. Many thanks for the painting. Am sending you under separate cover a photograph. [not included] Yours sincerely." John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) is known chiefly for writing over 100 marches, including such classics as The Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post, earning him the title of "The March King". Sousa, who had studied violin and trombone during his childhood, joined the U.S. Marine Band at age 13, playing with the group from 1867-1872. After later playing in popular orchestras, he returned in 1880 as director of the Marine Band, which is called the "President's Own". In addition to his many musical compositions, Sousa wrote five books, including three novels and an autobiography. Mounting paper and adhesive remnants on verso show through lightly. Otherwise, fine condition.
